Evaluation of Tongue Cancer Using High-Resolution Sonography

2015
agnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the preferred modality for evaluation of tongue cancer.1 Abnormalities detected on MRI are well correlated pathologically.2 Magnetic resonance imaging provides in-depth knowledge of tumor extension both inside and outside the tongue. However, it is generally expensive and sometimes unavailable. In addition, claustrophobia, incompatibility with metallic implants, and the length of the procedure are additional considerations. Although the risk of contrast agent reactions in MRI is less than that in computed tomography, they are known to occur.3 Magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents are to be avoided in patients with renal insufficiency.4,5 Nilu Malpani Dhoot, DNB, DMRD, Suman Hazarika, MD, PHD, Binoy Choudhury, MD, Amal C.
