First Record of the Ornate Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus ornatus) from the Brazilian Caatinga

ABSTRACT We present the first documented record of the Ornate Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus ornatus) in the Caatinga Biome. We tape-recorded a single individual from the Serra das Confusoes National Park in southern Piaui in March 2013. This record represents a range-extension of ~390 km from the nearest site in western Bahia, and highlights the likelihood of further major ornithological discoveries from this region that still remains poorly inventoried.
