Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α is the oxygen-labile subunit of HIF-1, the master regulator of oxygen homeostasis. HIF-1 is a critical regulator of the adaptive responses to hypoxia since it activates genes regulating angiogenesis, erythrogenesis and glucose metabolism. HIF-1 has also described to be involved in progression and metastasis of a variety of human tumors.
