Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI)

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a novel imaging technique that can reveal non-invasively unique information of white matter (WM) microstructures within the central nervous system (CNS). DTI provides image contrast based on differences in the magnitude of diffusion of water molecules within the brain. By measuring the directional dependence of water molecule diffusion, DTI generates unique tissue contrasts that can be used in the study of axonal organization in the CNS. Its applications include brain connectivity, study of the brain development, and WM diseases. This article presents the principles of DTI and its applications in neuroscience research.
