Ege Obez Hasta Okulu anket çalışması: obezite ile obstrüktif uyku apne sendromu semptomları ve gündüz uykululuk ilişkisi

2011
Aim: It is known that obesity increases the risk of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and causes daytime sleepiness. In this prospective study, investigation of the OSAS symptoms in obese cases and evaluation of the relationship between daytime sleepiness and obesity were aimed. Material and Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted with 202 obese cases attending at the “Ege Obese Patient School” and demographic data, information on co-morbidities and OSAS symptoms was obtained. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) was used to evaluate daytime sleepiness. Results: In the study, 149 (mean age 48.7±10.9 yrs, 12 men) and 53 morbid obese (mean age 47.4±10.4 yrs, 5 men) cases were included. Snoring (p=0.01), nocturnal choking (p=0.002) and unfreshed sleep (p10 (18.9% vs. 8.1%, p=0.04) was higher in morbid obese cases. It was shown that with an increase in body-mass index, the ESS increased (p=0.009, r=0.185). Conclusion: It was found that, in morbid obese cases, sleep apnea symptoms and excessive daytime sleepiness were observed more commonly than in obese cases and with an increase in body-mass index, daytime sleepiness increased. In conclusion, morbid obese cases should be investigated in terms of OSAS symptoms.
