This document presents the 1999 report of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) for the population and development indicators of Asia and the Pacific. The countries that belong to the ESCAP region are East and Northeast Asia Southeast Asia South and Southwest Asia North and Central Asia and the Pacific region. The data on mid-1999 population percentage annual growth rate crude birth rate crude death rate total fertility rate per woman percentage of births to women between ages 15 and 19 and contraceptive prevalence rate were collected from different sources for each country or region. Other essential data presented were life expectancy at birth for males and females; infant mortality rate; sex ratio of the population aged over 60; percentages of those aged 0-14 60-69 and over 70; percentage of urban population for 1999 and percentage annual growth rate; gross primary school enrollment ratio for males and females; human development index; and population projected for the year 2020. Presented in graphical form are the total fertility rates by subregion from 1975 to 2050.
