Management of prostate cancer in the elderly man

2014
Abstract In Switzerland and in most developed countries, the incidence of prostate cancer (PCa) is increasing, especially in older men. More than half of PCa are diagnosed over 70 years. The elderly population can be very heterogeneous and their management is a real challenge for all physicians. Older patients with PCa should be managed according to their individual health status, which is driven mainly by the severity of associated comorbid conditions, and not by patient's age. A complete assessment of their health status with validated measurement tools, like the G8 questionnaire (Geriatric 8) and the CISR-G (Cumulative Illness Rating Score-Geriatrics), is necessary to ensure a personalized treatment. This optimal assessment depends on the quality of collaboration between urologists, geriatricians, general practicians and other specialists, which can be accomplished for example in a prostate cancer center.
