A Unique Smart Village for People with Different Abilities

The definition of a smart village often tends to exclude people with special needs and different abilities. The chapter attempts to address this exclusion by focusing on one special organization in South India, Amar Seva Sangam, which has worked for the past 4 decades to create a unique physical and social environment for such people. The origins of the organization and its development through its passionate and visionary leaders are described. Unique inclusive programmes, addressing healthcare, education, skill development and rehabilitation, conceived and implemented by the board, staff and volunteers associated with the organization have benefitted thousands of children, youth and adults. The award-winning project, Mobile Village-Based Rehabilitation – Early Intervention, praised as a model for other rural communities to follow, is described in detail. Other elements of a smart village implemented by Amar Seva Sangam are also outlined.
