Nucleus-Nucleus Total Cross-Sections for Light Nuclei at 1.55-GeV/c/Nucleon and 2.89-GeV/c/Nucleon

1978
We have measured total cross sections for protons, dueterons, ..cap alpha.. particles, and /sup 12/C on hydrogen, deuterium, helium, and carbon targets at 1.55 and 2.89 GeV/c nucleon using the ''good geometry'' transmission method. In addition, we measured the inelastic cross sections and elastic slope parameters for reactions initiated by deuterons, ..cap alpha.. particles, and /sup 12/C. Our results are in good agreement with Glauber theory predictions, but the factorization relation sigma/sub T/(AA) = (sigma/sub T/(AB))/sup 2// sigma/sub T/(BB) is not a good guide. We find sigma/sub T/ approx. = 144(A/sub T//sup 1/3/ - A/sub p//sup 1/3/ - 1.48)/sup 2/ mb and sigma/sub I/N approx. = 78(A/sub T//sup 1/3/ + A/sub p//sup 1/3/ - 1.25)/sup 2/ mb, where A/sub T/(A/sub p/) is the atomic mass number of the target (projectile).
