Study on Adhesive Property to Vero Cell and Invading Property to HT-29 Cell of Viable but Nonculturable State of Shigella dysenteriae Type 1

2011
Objective To research cytotoxicity, adhesion and invasiveness ability of S.dysenteriae serotype 1 in the viable but nonculturable state(VBNC) through infecting Vero cells and HT-29 cells in vitro to investigate its potential pathogenicity. Methods Low temperature and starvation induced S.dysenteriae serotype 1 in the VBNC state was used to adhere to Vero cells to research its cytotoxicity, and invade into HT-29 cells to research the adhesion ability. Results S.dysenteriae serotype 1 in the VBNC state made the adherent Vero cells lost the adherent ability, and could adhere to HT-29 intestinal epithelial cells. Conclusion S.dysenteriae serotype 1 in the VBNC state still possess cytotoxicity, retains adherence ability, and preserves the ability of the pathogenic potential.
