Os animais de laboratório no meu carma

The past and the present, of the development of laboratory animal science in Brazil, are in this Prof. Rangel deep reflection. Starting with the desire of a boy of ten years, to be a miracle worker, followed by the struggle of a doctor by the search for a cure for tuberculosis and culminating in numerous and valuable achievements in science and hence to man. The animal entered the laboratory of Prof. Rangel life when he faced with the need for a reliable biological model for testing of biological products and research in immunology in the middle of the last century. Since then, his research conducted at the Instituto Butantan, Escola Paulista de Medicina, Instituto Pasteur de Paris, among others, were concerned with the welfare of animals, the same reduction in testing, even when the principle of the 3 “Rs” not was known. The relentless struggle of Prof. Rangel to development of science in laboratory animals, parallel to other battles throughout his professional activities, are reported in this paper.
