NO STANDING WATER : FAST-MOVING CITY DEVELOPS STRATEGY TO PREVENT FLOODING

2004
This article offers some strategies in preventing urban flooding. One approach is to provide storage under a street and install catch basins along it, thus allowing local runoff to be captured, stored and released to the main trunk sewer after the storm has passed. Cost and installation difficulties, however, can be the downside of underground storage. Other approaches include directing storm water into underutilized storm sewers by installing strip drains, low-point inlets, or high-capacity inlets. Street humps can also be used to detain flow, thus allowing the water to enter inlets sized for smaller rain events.
