The invention relates to a method for preparing a material with negative Poisson ratio characteristic, wherein the method comprises the steps: weighing 80-100 parts of powdery polytetrafluoroethylene, 5-40 parts of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene and 5-20 parts of a filler, and drying to remove water; mixing, adding 10-20 parts of a processing auxiliary agent, and mixing evenly, to obtain a viscous mixture; adding the viscous mixture into an extruder, and extruding to form a stick-like material; preparing a sheet with the thickness of 1.50 mm in a double-roller calender; in environments of the temperature of 100 DEG C and 200 DEG C, respectively drying for 12 h, and removing the residual auxiliary agent; introducing the extruded product into a high-temperature traction device, stretching and heat-setting in an environment of the temperature of 150 DEG C with the stretching ratio of 0-30; and carrying out traction from a high-temperature traction device, cooling to room temperature, and thus obtaining the material with the negative Poisson ratio characteristic. The material prepared by the method is an elastomer material, and the elastomer material has the negative Poisson ratio characteristic, is soft in texture, has the Shaw hardness of 40 A-75 A, is moderate in hardness, and is suitable for application in industry and engineering.
