Application of the principle of least work in problems of the hydrodynamic theory of lubrication

1984
The paper describes solutions to the problem of minimizing the friction loss in normal regimes and the problem of restricted lubrication of a segmental bearing. Results are given of calculations of the position of the points of support of the segments of a steam-turbine radial bearing ensuring a minimum of the friction loss. It is shown that if the flow rates are restricted, the optimal position of the point of support of a segment remains almost unchanged, and that although the minimal film thickness decreases it still remains sufficient to ensure reliable operation of the element. It is also shown that the friction losses decrease with decreasing lubricant flow rate with the load unchanged.
