CT Manifestation of Malignant Renal Tumor in Childhood:A Review of 52 Cases

2004
Objective To investigate the imaging manifestation of malignant renal tumor with CT.Methods Retrospectively review 52 cases of surgically and pathologically confirmed malignant renal tumor. Uncontrast and contrast CT was undertaken in all 52 patients in which 15 patients had MRI examination. Results The residual normal renal tissue of 29 cases of 34 cases of Wilms' tumor enhanced and manifested “crescent sign” or “ring sign”. Four cases of malignant rabdoid tumor manifested as large mass with notable necrosis and subcapsular fluid collection; 2 cases of clear cell sarcoma showed metastases to the skull which can indicate the diagnosis; renal cell tumor ( n =3) showed calcification in 1 case; renal lymphoma ( n =6) showed multiple oval or round nodules with hypodensity in both kidneies; renal involvement of leukemia ( n =3) showed symmetrically enlarged kidneies with hypodesity and no enhancement. Conclusion CT can precisely delineate the location, size, extent of involvement, imaging characteristics and metastases of renal tumor thus provide information necessary to the clinical staging, therapy planning and prognosis of the tumors.
