Once, when I challenged Al Shanker, former president of the American Federation of Teachers, for participating in the fabrication of these “crises,” he agreed
that it was nonsense. But after all, he argued, the more attention we pay to public
schooling, the more funding we’ll get, and that will be good for kids and teachers.
Unfortunately, you reap what you sow, and what we’re reaping now is one great
big mess.
