Supporting distributed working
2004
This chapter discusses the application of unified modeling language (UML) in a medium scale distributed project where the project team members are geographically spread. This case study concerns the importance of supporting communication between people in a project. The case study examines how UML can be used to support interpersonal communication and clarification of problems and design solutions to agree a way forward in the project. The majority of process models and methodologies that apply to projects comprise analysis, design, and implementation phases or stages that a work progresses through. The diagrams that support modeling of dynamic behavior supplement the modeling activities by helping to clarify, elaborate, and test the static structure models. These models were recorded in UML modeling tools and incorporated into formal project documents and presentations. The identification of scenarios of usage is important to the requirements capture process and to the project as a whole.
