FINAL REPORT: A REVIEW OF FULL SCALE TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE REMEDIATION OF CONTAMINATED SOIL. REPORT FOR THE ROYAL COMMISSION ON ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION
1996
The report reviews established technologies, with commercial implementation on several sites, including 43 case studies, in the UK, Europe and North America. The technologies are described and the types used to classify treatments are defined. An overview is given of their worldwide implementation, including barriers to their widespread use. Progress in emerging remedial approaches is discussed. A comprehensive review is given of each type of technology, including summary tables of established techniques. The types reviewed include biological, chemical, physical, solidification and stabilisation, and thermal treatment technologies. Those that have been demonstrated in field trials but not regularly used are identified. Medium term (up to five years) research and development priorities for new techniques to widen the implementation of established technologies are discussed. Those most likely to be achieved in the medium term are identified.
