BECKETT ET LA RELIGION AU TRAVERS DU PRISME DE QUELQUES TEXTES COURTS AUTO-TRADUITS

2016
Religious and biblical allusions in Beckett's early texts are often subjected to satire or profanation. Occasionally, however, a gentler and more nuanced incorporation of them emerges, and this tendency strengthens in the later short texts. Moreover, the act of self-translation presents Beckett with a further dilemma as he considers how to deal with the religious resonances of the source text. This article examines a selection of Beckett's later short texts, and explores how, in the process of translating them, Beckett re-approaches their religious or biblical content, either deepening its pessimism or alleviating it.
