BICYCLE TRANSPORT IN AUSTRALIA . NATIONAL TRANSPORT CONFERENCE; TRANSPORT FOR THE USERS; MELBOURNE, 23-25 MAY 1989; PREPRINT OF PAPERS

1989
Most transportation planning professionals will have had limited or no experience with catering for the bicycle as a transport mode, hence this group of users have been very poorly catered for. This paper presents an overview of the significance of the usage level of this mode, specific problem areas related to it, and a review of the solutions that are available. Several state governments have active bicycle programmes in place, administered by state bicycle committees or similar bodies, and have published planning and engineering design guidelines for providing for cyclists. New editions of these have been published in 1988 by Victoria, western Australia and naasra (to be published shortly). The approach and content of these is to be critically reviewed (a). For the covering record of the conference, see IRRD no 814837.
