Thin-Layer Chromatography on Basic Fuchsins: Separation and Typing of Thirty-Two Commercial Lots

1979
AbstractA method was developed in which the separation of the component dyes of basic fuchsin was performed on 32 commercial lots. Basic fuchsin is sold primarily as pararosanilin (CI 42500) or rosanilin (CI 42510) with related dyes as contaminants. The thin layer chromatographic (TLC) method correlated well, in all but one case, with information obtained from the Biological Stain Commission. One uncertified lot, labeled as pararosanilin, was identified as new fuchsin. The various blends of basic fuchsin are defined according to class, thereby more accurately identifying the composition of the dye used regardless of its labeling or its source. The TLC technic presented is an adequate chemical quality control procedure for routine work.
