Innovations in the Management of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders

2021
Innovations in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery have developed slowly over time. There are several texts detailing the different diagnostic tools and treatment algorithms for surgical and nonsurgical treatment of temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). This chapter aims to highlight a few of the key advances that have improved diagnosis, treatment planning, and management. Diagnostically, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), intra-oral scanning, and diagnostic arthroscopy have been important changes. Surgically, advanced surgical arthroscopy, advances in open joint surgical treatments, and the integration of human amnion materials and total joint replacement improvements have resulted in better treatment options and patient outcomes in recent decades. The development of digital platforms and virtual surgical planning (VSP) has made treatment planning much easier and more predictable.
