The economics of geriatric mental health care

Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the current funding mechanisms that support the provision of mental health care for older adults, the ongoing systemic economic and service delivery challenges in the provision of mental health care for older adults, and recent innovations in payment mechanisms and service delivery that offer promise for improving mental health care in our rapidly aging population. These innovations will be viewed through the lens of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as well as the rise of risk-based payment mechanisms, underscoring recent advances in high-value care delivery processes targeting mental health care in this population.
