µ-Preconcentrators Using Protic Imidazolium Polyionic Liquids for Chemical Warfare Agents Sampling at Trace Level

2019
Herein, we present microfluidic devices for sampling of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) diluted in gaseous streams. The scope of this work is to design and fabricate efficient, low-cost sample collectors for on-field application against terrorist and other malicious violent attacks. The main feature of our μ-sampling unit lies on the in-situ deposition and UV polymerization of a protic ionic liquid monomeric salt (MIL) inside an already sealed Si microdevice. Dynamic retention capacities have been assessed with vapors of a nerve agent surrogate, i.e. dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP). The coated μ–preconcentrators exhibit outstanding breakthrough volumes and higher sorption capacities than those reported for commercial sorbents.
