Attitudes of Liberal and Conservative Students toward Ingroups and Outgroups

1972
101 students attending a class on marriage and the family filled out a questionnaire to indicate how they felt about a number of different groups. The study was designed to test the hypothesis that those who have relatively positive attitudes toward outgroups will have relatively negative attitudes toward ingroups and vice versa. The prediction was supported in that attitudes toward presumed ingroups (e.g., parents, police, the Nixon administration, etc.) correlated –.48 with attitudes toward presumed outgroups (e.g., campus militants and Black Panthers).
