Future Technologies for Critical Communications Systems

This chapter provides a brief introduction to some of the emerging technologies that public safety and mission‐critical applications may use. It focuses on fifth generation (5G) wireless mobile communications systems, Augmented Reality (AR), the Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data analytics, which are expected to make a significant impact on public safety and critical business applications. 5G New Radio, or NR, is the new standard being developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for 5G wireless technology, capable of much faster, efficient, and scalable network. AR combines virtual reality with the real environment. The user of an AR product is always in touch with the real world, while interacting with virtual, created contents in the real world that we see and live in, so the experience is real and contextual. The chapter provides some use cases to highlight how Big Data analytics can help public safety agencies.
