Effects of Increasing Wind and Solar Power Energy on the Voltage Stability and Losses of the Egyptian Power System

2018
The Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) has paid attention to renewable energy sources (RES), especially (photovoltaic (PV) and wind power (WP)). The goal of the EEHC aims to increase the power generated from renewable energy sources to 20% by 2022. With that amount of renewable energy sources in the Egyptian power system, it's expected that some of the on line conventional power plants will be stopped and replaced by PV and WP. Thus the conventional reserve will reduce making the online conventional plants fewer to share the regulation burden. Therefore, the system voltage stability will be reduced, because the reduction of system reactive power and the system losses will increase since the wind farms generation is concentrated at far away from load. Also the voltage deviation will be greater after system contingences and more oscillation will act. Therefore, this paper studying the effects of increasing RES on the voltage stability and losses of the Egyptian electricity system using many scenarios of increasing the RES to 20%. The Egyptian power system model was created by using DIgSILENT powerfactory software. Finally different methods is presented to improve the voltage stability and to reduce the system losses.
