Realistic assessment of direct radiolysis for synthetic fuels production using fusion radiation sources

A characterization of fusion reactors as radiation sources and a review of the fundamentals of radiolysis are presented. Substantial technological obstacles to development of efficient and economical radiolytic processes for synthetic fuel production are identified. Combined radiolytic/thermochemical cycles that have been proposed for synthetic fuels production are analyzed for potential for commercialization. 67 refs.
