A JOINT FORMULATION OF VISUALIZATION AND NUMERICAL OPTIMIZATION FOR ENGINEERING DESIGN OPTIMIZATION

In this paper some considerations about why design optimization techniques are so scarcely used in industry are first summarized. Then it is pointed out that a closer approach to the point of view of design engineers is required to overcome this problem. In this regard a formulation linking advanced visualization and design optimization is presented and two examples, one of size optimization of a vehicle body, and another one of shape optimization of a connecting rod are included to justify the advantages of this methodology.
