Development of a Portable Monitoring System for Indoor E-Cigarettes Emission

2020
This work demonstrates a battery powered portable monitoring system to measure the emission from e- cigarettes. The developed system includes 3 sensors to detect and quantify the toxins from e-cigarette emission. The results show that the developed system can distinguish between air and e-cigarette vapors. The portable system consists of 3 sensors, WiFi and Bluetooth enabled MCU, temperature and humidity sensors on a 39mm x 36mm PCB board. The system functionality was validated with acetone exposure in a controlled environment and with the actual e-cigarette emission in an outdoor environment. When the system is exposed to the e-cigarette, the temperature decreased, while the humidity increased. It was found that a large change in the PM sensor reading occurs when directly exposed to the e-cigarette. This multi modal and portable sensing system enables detection of e-cigarette emissions in real-time as well as to monitor indoor air quality.
