The author sketches the history of psychoanalysis in Germany, beginning with the arrival of Karl Abraham in Berlin in 1908 up to 1933 and its destruction through Gleichschaltung in the Third Reich and focusses on the description of the structure of the DPV from its formation in 1950 to the present. He outlines (1) its considerable growth including 12 training institutes, which is owed partly to the inclusion of analytical psychotherapies in the health benefits catalogue of the German health insurance companies, (2) the university and extra-university institutions and scientific debates influences by psychoanalysis, (3) trends whithin psychoanalysis as well as (4) some outstanding personalities and their works. The coexistence of DPV and DPG and the overall organizational function of the DGPT are mentioned.
