THE INFLUENCE OF IMPACT VELOCITY ON THE PENETRATOR WITH ENHANCED LATERAL EFFECTS (PELE)

2007
In order to study the relation between the impact velocity and PELE effect,an experiment of PELE projectiles impacting steel plate in different velocities is carried out, with a same projectile and target. The experimental results show that the impact velocity is closely related with the number and area of the debris. With impact velocity between 400~900 m/s,after PELE perforates the target, the amount of the debris and the covering area increase and the lateral effect is intensified.Three dimensional numerical simulation of PELE impacting target is carried out with different impact velocities. It is shown that the experimental results are in good agreement with those of the numerical simulation. However,in our research,a phenomenon is found that the lateral velocity of the debris drops in the speed of about 900 m/s and falls to a minimum when the impact velocity rises to near 1100 m/s,and goes up gradually afterward.
