O presente estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar a regeneracao natural de especies arboreas nativas no sub-bosque de uma area com Eucalyptus saligna Sm., considerando-se os mecanismos de regeneracao (banco de plântulas, chuva de sementes e banco de sementes). O estudo da comunidade vegetal foi realizado em 30 parcelas de 10 x 10 m, onde foram mensurados os individuos arboreos. O banco de plântulas foi amostrado em sub-parcelas de 1 x 1 m, sendo a amostragem da chuva de sementes realizada em 30 coletores, distribuidas nas parcelas. O banco de sementes foi analisado por meio da coleta de amostras do solo. O banco de sementes do solo, com predominio de especies herbaceas, indica o potencial para colonizacao imediata e restabelecimento da area apos possiveis perturbacoes. A chuva de sementes fornece propagulos que contribuiem para o estabelecimento de especies neste habitat. O banco de plântulas consiste na principal estrategia de regeneracao natural de muitas especies arboreas na comunidade vegetal. Analisando-se os resultados obtidos pode-se concluir que o eucalipto possibilita a regeneracao natural de especies arboreas nativas no sub-bosque. Abstract This study aimed to characterize the natural regeneration of native trees species in the understory of an area with Eucalyptus saligna Smith., considering the regeneration mechanisms (bank seedlings, seed rain and seed bank). The study of plant community was carried in 30 plots of 10 x 10 m, where individual trees were measured. The seedling bank was sampled in sub-plots of 1 x 1 m. The sampling of the seed rain was carried out in 30 collectors, distributed in the plots. The seed bank was analyzed by collecting soil samples in the plots. The soil seed bank with a predominance of herbaceous species demonstrates potential for colonization and immediate restoration of area after possible disturbances. The seed rain provides seedlings which contribute to the establishment of species in this habitat. The seedling bank is the main strategy for regeneration of many trees species in plant community. Based upon the results it is possible to conclude that the eucaliptus do not preclude the natural regeneration of the native species trees in the understory.
