FATIGUE CRACK GROWTH BEHAVIOR OF GLASS REINFORCE ALUMINUM LAMINATES

1992
In this paper, fatigue crack growth behavior and the delamination phenome-non under different stress levels of a new kind of hybrid composite-glass fiber reinforce alumi-num laminates(GLALL)have been investigated. It is found that fatigue crack growth rate ofGLALL laminates is much lower than that of monolithic aluminum sheet, and this is due to thepresence of unbroken high strength glass fibers on the crack, which acts as bridge and lowers theeffective stress intensity factor on the crack tip.It is also found that with the fatigue crackgrowth in aluminum layer, the near crack area delaminates, the width of the delamination areaincreases with the increasing of applied stress. The effect of fibers on the fatigue crack is moreprominent when the delamination area is small.
