Survey on Fast Inter-frame Mode Selection for H.264/AVC

The improvement of rate-distortion performance in H.264 is due to the accurate motion estimation with different mode decision including multiple block size and multiple reference frame motion estimation.The best mode can be achieved by full exhaustive search of all block sizes,however the computational complexity of this algorithm is rather huge.Therefore,high efficiency algorithm design for mode decision is a key research area.This paper puts forwards a basic train of mode decision optimization based on the multi-macroblock partition and mode decision algorithms.After comparing many typical fast mode decision algorithms according to the reason and performance effect,it brings forward the research direction of fast inter mode decision.
