Timber: more effective utilization. [Wood and paper]

1976
The major products from timber are structural wood products and fiber products. The structure of the wood industry, the rapid technological changes occurring in the industry and the factors affecting them, and the energy and material effectiveness are evaluated. Although the paper industry is highly energy intensive, it is producing about 40 percent of its energy needs from combustion of waste products. The structural wood industry is also producing much of its energy requirements from waste combustion. Recommendations for improving the structure of the wood industry and increasing its energy and material efficiency are tabulated. A major recommendation is for the substatial increase of funds allocated to research and development possibly promoted by legislative incentives. (JSR)
