Genre-based Approach and College-English Reading Instruction

Traditional English classroom reading seemed to be characterized by teacher-centeredness and grammar-orientation in China.Hence,language learners’ reading ability might not be improved significantly.In order to improve Chinese learners’ reading ability,genre-based approach could be applied to China’s college-English reading instruction,which could touch upon contextual knowledge,rhetorical structure and corresponding textual features of reading texts.This study reviewed the theoretical background of genre-based approach,discussed its application in college-English reading instruction and its own advantages and disadvantages.In view of above,the aim was to attract domestic English teaching community’s attention to the application of genre-based approach in college-English reading instruction and promote the reform of college-English reading teaching.
