Modified Quadratic Following Boost Converter - Robustness Considerations

2020
In this paper a modified quadratic following boost converter for point of load driving is introduced. The proposed circuit is able to provide higher boost as well as better performance than the conventional quadratic boost converters. Volt-sec balance principle is applied and then voltage gain features describing relationships are formulated. Also, a detailed cycle-by-cycle analysis is formulated to predetermine the proposed converter capacitors charging voltages. The state-space models are derived which are then used to obtain linear models. A controller is designed to ensure constant load voltage for most of the operating points close to nominal conditions. Robustness considerations are enforced during design so that the final controller exhibits adequate robustness range. A 12 to 48 V levels are adopted for the experimentation purpose. A 50 kHz, 24 Watt prototype is built for experimentation. Regulation characteristics along with sample steady-state measurement waveforms are included to demonstrate the power conversion effectiveness of the proposed modified quadratic converter.
