New frontiers in liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma

2020
Abstract Liver resection is one of the main curative option for early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) developed on cirrhosis and the treatment of choice in non-cirrhotic patient. However, a careful selection of patients is required to balance between the risk of post-operative liver failure and the potential benefit on long-term outcome. In the last decades, improvement of surgical techniques and perioperative management, as well as a better selection of the patients, allowed to enlarge the indications of liver resection. This review aims to describe the main indications of liver resection in the management of HCC, its role compared to percutaneous ablation and liver transplantation in the therapeutic algorithm as well as the recent advances in liver surgery that could be used to improve the prognosis of patients with HCC.
