Studies on Genetic Variability in Stable Male Sterile, Maintainer and Restorer Lines of Pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.]

The present investigation was undertaken with the objective to evaluate the variation among stable male sterile, maintainer and restorer lines of pigeon pea. The variability was studied in terms of genotypic and phenotypic variance, coefficient of genotypic and phenotypic variation, heritability and genetic advance. The wide range of variability was exhibited by number of pods per plant, seed yield per plant. 100 seed weight and for other yield attributing traits also. High heritability was exhibited by all characters studied. High genetic advance coupled with high heritability estimates were observed for number of pods per plant, seed yield per plant, plant height and pod bearing length. High genetic advance coupled with high heritability indicates that characters governed by additive gene action and hence genetic improvement for these characters would be possible by following suitable method of selection.
