Evaluación de la eficacia y tolerancia del Programa de Restauración Neurológica del CIREN en pacientes adultos con infarto cerebral crónico de territorio carotídeo

2009
Introduction: Cerebral infarction is the most frequent presentation of cerebrovascular, disease, causing an important handi- cap in patients that survive. The neurological sequels are tributary of rehabilitation treatment in most of the patients. Material and method: A clinical trial was carried out and included 80 patients with chronic neurological sequels after cerebral infarction of carotid territory, submitted to the Neurological Restoration Program of the International Center of Neurological Restoration. These patients received treatment between January 2005 and January 2007, for a period of 4 weeks. They were evaluated pre and post treatment using the Scandinavian Scale Stroke and Barthel Index. For the statistical analysis i twas used the t-Student test. Results: Patients were included 6 or more months after their stroke. It was obtained a significant recovery of the neurological deficit and an improvement of the functional condition in most of patients (p < 0.05). Better recovery was appreciated in motor deficits, especially the gait and motility of extremities (p < 0.05). It was also obtained an improvement of orientation and language (p < 0.05). Patients improved in the abilities to eat, get dressed, use of the toilet, translation, gait and use of stairways (p < 0.05). Some adverse events were reported. Conclusions: Neurological Restoration Programs represents an effective treatment to improve neurological deficits and secondary functional limitations after Cerebral Infarction of carotid territory.
