The Ministry of Atomic Energy of the Russian Federation (MINATOM) is a scientific-industrial complex of technologically interrelated enterprises in the mining of raw materials, production of fissile materials, fabrication of nuclear fuel for atomic power engineering and items of military technology, industrial and experimental reactors, processing of spent fuel with burial of radioactive wastes, and a sector response system for possible emergency situations. MINATOM also serves as a network of scientific institutes for fundamental and applied research in the field of nuclear power engineering and technology. The sector consists of 29 power-generating units at nine AES [nuclear power plants], the industrial enterprise “Atommash,” and other enterprises and organizations. Fig. 1 shows the location of the nuclear installations on the map of Russia.
