Vibro-sealing; A Technique for Waste Containment in Fractured Clayey Till

1997
A containment technique, here termed {open_quotes}vibro-sealing{close_quotes}, has been developed for use in weathered clayey soils to overcome some of the potential limitations of the existing cut-off wall type of containment technologies. The vibro-sealing process involves the manual insertion of a concrete vibrator (a {open_quotes}vibro-probe{close_quotes}) into the ground assisted with high pressure water, as required. The vibrations induced by the probe result in compression and remolding of the clayey soil. Once the probe is withdrawn, the cavity left by the probe is pressure grouted, thus creating a {open_quotes}vibro-seal{close_quotes}. Besides being installed vertically, vibro-seals can be installed at an angle to the horizontal, thus allowing encapsulation of the contaminant source. In addition, the equipment is light weight, easy to use, rapid and produces no excavated contaminated soil.
