The fascination of comparative national analysis has long exercised its spell on medical reformers. And with sound reason, I believe. However pleased one may be with one's own habit or program, a look at another can be informative and stimulating. Conversely, however displeased one may be with one's own system, the problems and dilemmas faced by others in this same connection may put the brake on some proposals or offer rewarding directions for change. Flexner, at the turn of the century, took a long look at medical education in Europe to support his arguments for reform of medical education in the United States and Canada.1
