PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability of character entry in a portable electronic device. SOLUTION: An X-axis angle detector 11 and a Y-axis angle detector part 12 each provide an angle representing the tilt of a handheld terminal 1 to a display control part 14. The display control part 14 displays an "a" column area to a "wa" column area of the Japanese kana syllabary circularly, and when a user tilts the handheld terminal 1, and provides a control signal for focusing on one of the column areas from the "a" column area to the "wa" column area corresponding to the degree of tilting to a display part 15 composed of an LCD 32, etc. At a character entry processor 17, the entry button 31 of the handheld terminal 1 is held down by the user. The column area focused on at the time is determined as being the column area for the character the user intends to enter, and the entry processing is done.
