FRONTIERS IN ELECTROMAGNETIC MOMENT STUDIES FOR NUCLEI FAR-FROM-STABILITY

2013
The determination of electromagnetic moments of nuclear level has traditionally played a major role in the critical evaluation and elucidation of nuclear structure models by providing unique information on the underlying wave function and shape of the level under study. In general, magnetic moments probe the singleparticle, neutron/proton aspects while quadrupole moments are sensitive to the collective degrees of freedom and the underlying shape. The importance of such studies has been amplified in recent years in connection to the efforts to understand nuclear structure for far-from-stability nuclei, with extreme isospin values. For these purposes, the established techniques and detection systems have had to undergo a significant stage of appropriate modifications and upgrade.
