Photon momentum in a distorted optical field
2017
In a laser beam, the momentum carried by light is locally affected by spacial intensity and phase fluctuations. In this letter, we show that fluctuations of the momentum is correlated to intensity fluctuations of the beam. We propose a model to estimate the contribution of short-scale distortions to the local photon momentum. We experimentally measure this contribution by using an atom interferometer. We also discuss how such effects, which have always been neglected, impact high-precision measurements based on atom interferometry.
