The invention relates to a method for operating a hybrid engine system (1) having a first drive unit (2), in particular an internal combustion engine and a second drive unit (3), in particular an electric motor, comprising the steps of: - driving the first drive unit (2) and the second drive unit (3), so that the first drive unit (2) and the second drive unit (3) each provide an output (VTM, ETM), to provide a total output; - output of limiting of the first drive unit (2) provided (VTM) to a limit value (GM) which is smaller than a maximum deployable from the first drive unit (2) output, - releasing the limiting, when supplied by the second drive unit (3) output (ETM) corresponding to a maximum of the second drive unit provided (3) output.
