The Pronunciation Change of the Negative Character “Wu” in Shaoxing Dialect

2004
The pronunciation change of the negative character “Wu” in Shaoxing dialect is a very particular phenomenon. There are two cases:Firstly, it often joins the collocated syllables in the language flow;Secondly,it often drops in the fixed structure “A(B)勿A(B)”,and appears the repeated question form. In the above two cases, the model of syllable structure and the model of tone change are both particular. As to the reason why “Wu” changes,it is due to the low and unclear pronunciation feature, the cohesion in its activity ability, the high-frequency uses as well as the result of the assimilation-tendency law in pronunciation change of some relative characters.
