Portal hypertension in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis

1998
Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a chronic liver disease that slowly progresses over time to a true cirrhosis when regenerating nodules are found on liver biopsies (stage IV according to Ludwig’s criteria). Portal hypertension should then occur with the development of esophageal and gastric varices that, when of a large size, may bleed.
